Kumamoto Masters: Magnificent Tunjung Makes History

Gregoria Mariska Tunjung authored a stunning takedown of Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei on Sunday, in the process creating history by becoming the first Indonesian women’s singles player to win a Super 500 or above title (equivalent of a Superseries) since the Superseries was launched in 2007.

While Tunjung has beaten Chen before – twice in nine meetings – the final of the Kumamoto Masters Japan 2023 saw the Olympic champion fall apart to Tunjung’s near-perfect play, particularly in the second game when the Indonesian won 11 of the last 12 points.

Chen had an edge at the interval, leading 11-9, but from then Tunjung took charge, with her steep angles and reverse crosscourt doing the damage, while her athletic retrievals returned Chen’s best shots.

“Honestly, I wasn’t thinking about anything as I stepped out on court today,” said the champion. “This is the final, I know I will be disappointed if I don’t play to the best of my ability. So today, I just tried my best to win every single point, and thankfully, I got the win eventually.

“The key to win today was my patience, but Chen Yu Fei also made a few mistakes and that helped me believe in myself more, and believe that I can counter anything she gave me.”

This was Tunjung’s second title of the season after the Madrid Spain Masters 2023.

Viktor Axelsen won his sixth crown of the season

In the men’s singles final, Viktor Axelsen continued his domination of Shi Yu Qi, picking up his sixth title of the season with a 22-20 21-17 result.

Barring their first encounter in 2017 that Shi won, Axelsen has won all of their subsequent eight meetings.
