Olympic champions Chen Yu Fei and Wang Yi Lyu/Huang Dong Ping led a strong contingent of Chinese shuttlers into the quarterfinals of 2022 Gwangju YONEX Korea Masters today.
Chen and Wang/Huang, top seeds in their respective events and among the first to take to court, won their matches in straight games.
The 24-year-old Chen, who has not lost to Saena Kawakami since 2017, picked up her third consecutive win – 21-14 21-17 – over the Japanese while the mixed doubles favourites defeated Korean pair Jung Jae Wook/Lee Yeon Woo 21-12 21-18.
He Bing Jiao later outclassed home girl Kim Gaeun, winning both her games with identical scores of 21-14 in 36 minutes.
The quartet will be joined in the last eight by men’s singles shuttler Lu Guang Zu and mixed pairs Zheng Si Wei/Zhang Shu Xian and Ou Xuan Yi/Huang Ya Qiong – none of them requiring a third game to go through. Ou also advanced in men’s doubles with Liu Yu Chen while Wang Zhi Yi needed three games to conquer her junior days rival Goh Jin Wei 20-22 21-7 21-12.
