It was not a good day in the office for many of the seeded players at the Korea Open Badminton Championships 2022 as their title hopes in Suncheon were torpedoed on quarterfinals day.
Sixth seed, from Thailand, Ratchanok Intanon was dumped out of the tournament by teammate, Pornpawee Chochuwong 18-21 21-12 21-13. The world No.10 took 62 hard-fought minutes to battle it out for a spot in the semifinals against Kim Gaeun tomorrow.
This will be their third encounter, having last met at the SCG Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2016, with the advantage in the Korean’s favour.
Third seeds Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy too were seen off by home hopes Kang Minhyuk/Seo Seungjae 22-20 18-21 22-20, and after clocking up one of the longest matches of the day in 78 minutes, the tandem level their head-to-head with one-a-piece over the Indian pair.
New mixed doubles duo, and big names, Ong Yew Sin/Goh Liu Ying, from Malaysia, are still finding their style and form since announcing their partnership earlier this year but succumbed to home favourites, Kim Wonho/Jeong Na Eun 21-14 21 23 21-16 in a little over an hour.
Many of the remaining top seeds powered past their opponents.
Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie prevailed over Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, after almost throwing away his chances in the opening game, 8-21 21-17 21-19. The world No.8 locks horns with India’s Kidambi Srikanth in the next round.
Indonesia extended their hopes in men’s doubles with Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan and Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto both conquering their opponents in straight games.
Indian supremo, Pusarla V. Sindhu forced her way into the semifinals with a straight-game victory over Busanan Ongbamrungphan from Thailand 21-10 21-16. In doing so, she tips the head-to-head 16 to one.
It will be dicey in the semifinal for the two-time Olympic medallist where she faces An Seyoung, after the young Korean saw off Saena Kawakamii 21-14 21-7 in 37 minutes. The Indian will need to dig deep against the teenage sensation, having lost their previous three encounters.
