Swiss Open: Malaysians Galore in Quarterfinals

All but three of Malaysia’s 11 representatives advanced from the second round yesterday, leaving them with the most quarterfinalists at the YONEX Swiss Open 2022.

Men’s doubles second seeds and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik will lead the Malaysians’ charge in the last eight today following a 30-minute 21-15 21-14 victory over Bokka Navaneeth/Reddy B. Sumeeth.

Fellow men’s pairs – sixth seeds Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi and YONEX GAINWARD German Open 2022 winners Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin also went through in straight games against Alexander Dunn/Adam Hall and Jeppe Bay/Lasse MØlhede respectively.

They will be joined by women’s singles shuttler Kisona Selvaduray, mixed pairs Goh Soon Huat/Lai Shevon Jemie and Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing and women’s pairs Anna Ching Yik Cheong/Teoh Mei Xing and Vivian Hoo/Lim Chiew Sien in the quest to make the semifinals in Basel.

World No.64 Selvaduray’s match in particular, was a memorable 17-21 21-13 21-13 come-from-behind win over childhood idol Saina Nehwal, who is ranked 41 spots higher.

Meanwhile, a day after ousting YONEX All England Open 2022 champions Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana, men’s doubles third seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty was outgunned by another Indonesian pair.

The Indians lost to Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan 21-19 22-20.

Mixed doubles also lost its third seeds – Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith, who went down to Germans Jones Ralfy Jansen/Linda Efler 16-21 21-19 21-19 after a gruelling 72-minute battle.

Ellis and Smith battled for 72 minutes before bowing out.
