Greysia Polii has achieved much in her career but an Indonesian Open crown alludes her.
Yesterday, she won through to a second Indonesia Open final, having previously achieved the same feat in 2015 with Nitya Krishinda Maheswari. But today, her and partner Apriyani Rahayu are hoping to go one better as they look to cap off a magical year in style..
They progressed to the Indonesia Open 2021 decider in emphatic style with a 21-18 21-14 win over No.3 seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul Rawinda Prajongjai in 58 minutes.
It sets up a clash with last week’s DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2021 champions Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida from Japan.
For Polii, though, winning for her home country, on home soil means everything to her.
“Indonesia is our home, our country and we want to do our very best. During the pandemic, we have all been experiencing difficulties. As athletes, we have also faced difficulties too, but we just want to give out positive energy and attitude to everyone,” she said.
COVID-19 has meant a shift in location away from the Indonesia Open’s traditional home at the Istora in Jakarta, but that hasn’t stopped Polii and Rahayu feeling the love from afar.
“I believe their presence is with us right now even though the stadium is not filled with fans, the fans are still with us. I’m really grateful to be in the final again and I really, really want to try again. This is a good chance for me and Apriyani.”
Polii/Rahayu have a 2-0 head-to-head record against Matsuyama and Shida.
