The surging confidence of Turkey’s Neslihan Yigit was apparent as she cruised through her opening rounds at the DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2021. Yigit’s Masters campaign was eventually halted by long-standing nemesis Pusarla V. Sindhu 21-13 21-10 in the quarterfinals.
Yigit has faced the two-time Olympic medallist three times this year but couldn’t find a way through to win.
“She has a lot of power and speed,” admitted the Turk. “I will keep working hard and do my best next time. I’m really sad to have lost today.”
After eliminating world no.11 Michelle Li 21-14 21-19 in round one, Yigit revealed she has spent some time working on herself in recent years.
“It has a lot to do with how I’ve developed my mind. I really concentrate and focus (these days) and that has really helped me.”
Li was in high praise of her opponent: “I’ve been seeing her more at the bigger tournaments. Her game has definitely matured, and her physical condition is very good. She’s very strong. She’s changed quite a bit.”
Things only got better for Yigit when she defeated Maria Ulitina 21-18 21-13 in the second round, much to her own delight.
“I’ve learnt a lot about myself throughout the tournament. There are things I am really good at and other parts I can improve on. I’m continuing to work on my fitness.
“Getting into the top 20 is the aim. I want to compete and win against the top ranked players, like Pusarla V. Sindhu. I couldn’t do that this time around but yes, I want to be up there with the top level players. I believe I can get there if I work hard enough.”
When quizzed if she intended to alter her training routine to include an overseas stint against top-tier players, she said: “Not at the moment, perhaps one day and that could make a difference, but for now my training remains in Turkey and I’m very happy with that.”
