Young Indian Men’s Doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made the semi-finals of the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters with a memorable win yesterday in Jakarta.
The Indians took down fourth seeds Mads Conrad-Petersen/Mads Pielder Kolding in an hour-long encounter that culminated in a tense finish, 23-21 15-21 21-19.
The Indians will be up against the crowd today as they take on top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, who also needed three games to get past Chinese Taipei’s Chen Hung Ling/Wang Chi-Lin, 20-22 21-14 21-14.
The other semi-final will feature World champions Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan against Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen in an all-Chinese encounter.
In Women’s Singles, Saina Nehwal scored a significant victory over younger compatriot Pusarla V Sindhu. Nehwal was able to close out the match in straight games, 21-13 21-19, and will next face Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, who beat World champion Nozomi Okuhara (Japan) in straight games.
The top half will see Tai Tzu Ying (Chinese Taipei) versus He Bingjiao (China). Tai continued her dominance over Sung Ji Hyun (Korea), while He Bingjiao held off Carolina Marin (Spain) in straight games.
Local Men’s Singles hopeful Anthony Ginting beat Chen Long for the second time in two weeks, but yesterday’s match was closer. Ginting prevailed 21-11 16-21 21-18 and takes on Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen in the semi-finals. Chou beat Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus in three games. The other semi-final will see Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai against Korea’s Son Wan Ho.
Malaysia Masters champions Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl progressed to a last-four showdown with Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi. The Danes were easy winners over Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai 21-18 21-10, while the Japanese were just as dominant over Korea’s Chang Ye Na/Jung Kyung Eun.
The top half will feature Indonesia’s Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu against Korea’s Lee So Hee/Shin Seung Chan.
Malaysia’s Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai beat compatriots Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing for the second straight time to make the Mixed Doubles semi-finals against China’s Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong.
The top half will be an all-Indonesian affair between Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir and Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti.
